Miner's Son 04:43
Miner's Son Oh, I see a miner's son come beat me from the bed I've won. A foolish boy, a heartless child that holds his head up high. Standing on the hearthrug, one sharp tug and then it's gone - Like crockery on flagstones, oh, by now I guess I'm done. And I'm done, yes I'm done, oh I'm done. A miner's son, and I'm done, yes I'm done. Bloodlust over breakfast while I'm pouring out the juice, I see you out there in your lingerie, your hair all bright and loose. In calico, in hessian, in gingham to my right, While out there in the market place, they set their wears alight. Let them shine, let them shine, let them shine. You foolish child, let them shine, let them shine. How strange the day has grown: How clear the air, but dull the sky, How far from morning we've flown. I find myself again, hanging from a framework I've let rust and cannot mend.

Gentleman 02:58
Gentleman If you were a lady, and I were your man, When we dance, would we dance hand in hand? And if you laughed at my jokes and I was stunned by your beauty, Would we be for all eternity? If I were a gentleman, I would not invite you in, But since I am no gentleman, Great is my sin. As we near my door, I turn to you and say You can come in, but the coffee is pretty poor, And the sex is terrible... You just laugh with a knowing smile, and you say Hey that's alright, I might just come up for a little while. If I were a gentleman… And in this way, in no time at all, we're on the kitchen floor, And I'm staring at the light bulb thinking, I've been here before, But I can't seem to place the face. If I were a gentleman...

The Great I Am You say you found your man and that you love him with both hands, And yes, you think that you have found the only one. But you're not the only one that has the only one, Ergo, I don't know if you have the only one. You come home on Sunday, black the eye and leave on monday, With the Great I Am stretched out beneath your feet. But you're not the only one that has the only one, Ergo, I don't know if you have the only one. When he comes, if he comes, You and I will mark the great divide. Standing on the bathroom chair to wipe the blood from off your head, I think about the first time that I saw you fall. Oh no, I know the big idea, enough I see already made, Now you need what you believe you need. When he comes… You say you found your man and that you walk now hand in hand, And yes, you think that you have found the only one.

For Your Troubles I would jump through hoops for you, I would be a fool for you, I would fall off cliffs for you, And swim the coldest seas for you. I'd always hold the door for you, Spread coats across lakes of fire for you, I'd appreciate your genius, And celebrate your victories with you I'd wait up all night for you, Because I would take my time with you. I would dance for hours with you, Never play another note for you. I have cried all night with you, And I will cry all night about you, But I would dry these eyes for you, And laugh until it's light with you. I'd plot and never plan for you, I'd always understand you, Because I would read your mind for you, I'd be a better man for you. I would take the blame for you, And I would lose the day for you, But I'd just lose my way in you, And end up losing grace with you. I would skate thin ice for you, I'd walk a thousand miles for you, I would maybe lie to you, If I thought it could get through to you, But I can't change your mind for you, So I will stop my tongue for you, And I will turn away from you, And slowly walk away from you. I have jumped through hoops for you, And it's all that I can do for you.

You're Wrong 04:17
You're Wrong I don't know you now, And it's years until I will. You're driving south in your ageing SUV. There's a birdcage on the backseat, And the sun in your eyes. Fifteen days and then you'll sleep. But I don't see you falling over yourself to get on track. I don't see you falling over yourself. In fact, I think that you've been holding yourself back In fact, I think that you've been waiting for me to pull some Some new trick from my bag. My red rag to your white flag. I'll waste the afternoon, Though I know where I should be. I don't feel that now, So I won't go. Some new trick from my bag. My red rag to your white flag.

Stumbling Block I got up, I got out, and I left, And I walked for days. I searched, and tried to find Some kind of peace of mind, But it still haunts me, And that hacks me off. I flapped until my fat arse flew, And I scanned horizons Until I found a chink of light. I flew towards it, But bashed my beak against glass, I looked inside, and I saw men and their machines lain broken. I saw film reels and projectors, All spinning round out of control. They shone their light on my life, They tried to make believe. They said when the shit hits the fan, The safest place to stand is right behind. Well they're all behind me now, They're right behind me. They're all behind me, so I guess I should get on with it. I'll get up, I'll get out, and I'll go, And I'll walk the streets, I'll try to find another whole to piss my soiled soul into. I'll say love me She'll say with my heart or my hand? I'll say, well baby, I'll take what you can give, Just lay me down and lay it on me. I'll scratch the dirt for a jewell, I'll pound the ground until the moon shines through, It's not long since I had know what I was doing, Won't be long until I will again.

Union 05:00
Union Day break dull on duller day, and crack the night between. There's a fickle sky, and fickle breeze, that gives the lie beneath. And you crawl now with sureness from the trunk to the bough, With the full force of union on your dark hungered brow. Now, by god, it's understood, this man-shaped thing you hold. And you will hold this beggar's hand until that hand turns gold. And you crawl now with sureness from the trunk to the bough, With the full force of union on your dark hungered brow. The bright city gates and high city walls, The gathered fog, and all this glass, and now all these foul weather friends, And I don't understand why you grace me with pleasure When all that I do is erase what you make. It's a crass form of compliment - laying down on you each night With my hand in your hair, and my face against your face. I hope we hold more than each other, I hope we're worth more than the sum of two lovers, The black little victories, the cornfields, the pedigree, "Rolling me over, it shoulders me under." Come, baby come, would you blacken your eye? Would you sing with that smile that you crack half in time With that beat that you make with your hand and your foot, With your tooth against tooth as you chew through the root? If you love, then you'll love; if you don't then you won't; If you sink then you'll sink; if you float then you'll float. And that beat that you make with your hand and your foot, With your tooth against tooth as you chew through the root...
